In a blog entry looking into D2R Items the way Diablo: Resurrected group considered adapting the game to consoles, design director Robert Gallerani explained how decisions made regarding the game's playability on consoles were an effort to focus "on an entirely different audience than the PC players." Because console players have more experience with that console-based version Diablo, Blizzard needed to make Diablo similarly approachable.
One way Diablo: Resurrected on consoles does this is by taking a page from Diablo's playbook regarding how it handles display and mapping abilities.
"In the beginning of Diablo game, a player was given two buttons: right and left mouse click," Gallerini writes. "To gain access to a variety of diverse abilities, players make use of hotkeys for rapid remaps of both of these buttons. When using the controller, this was modified to not remap instead, having buttons that activate the abilities. In this case, we display these capabilities like Diablo on an under-display tray located in the lower portion of the HUD."
When it comes to moving, Diablo on consoles controls very differently from its PC counterpart. On PC, players click on a location, and the game effectively sends their character to that location. On consoles however, Blizzard wanted the play to have direct control over their character's movements via the thumbstick.
Blizzard achieved this by effectively disabling the game's pathfinding for consoles. This allows players to move their bodies in a manner "the game would have never been able to guide you before." This allows it much easier to buy diablo 2 resurrected items stay away from attackers.
