After a long downtime, the Monero Space forum is back!
First I want to thank everyone who has helped with the administration of the forum so far, especially @needmoney90, serhack, and @xmrscott! The three of them have been absolutely instrumental in helping out.
We also want to thank YOU for using the forum! You're helping to contribute to a strong Monero community!
What happened?
Sadly, we learned that our server was partially compromised, seemingly by SSH. Attackers had rather ironically started mining Monero on our servers. Our VPS host contacted us to inform us of the issue right away, and we reacted quickly to figure out what went wrong and what the damages were. It seems that our server was contributing to Monero in more ways than we wanted!
Luckily, the attacker did not compromise the account emails, posts, and other user information. We performed a security analysis to confirm this. After much delicate handling by volunteers, the forum data was recovered and safely transferred to a new device. We then conducted a security analysis on the new server before relaunching.
We are extremely saddened that this occurred, and the Monero Space workgroup is taking steps to ensure that its new infrastructure is secure and reliable. If you would like to be a part of these discussions, please join #monero-space on Freenode IRC or Matrix/Element.
